Chickpea gives a channel a named AI teammate that holds its own Notion connection: a Notion Slack integration you talk to. You sign in with Notion on a page Chickpea serves, then tick the pages and databases the teammate may use. It reaches those and nothing else.

Reads never need confirmation. The teammate searches the pages and databases you approved, opens the ones that look right, and reads a page as Markdown so it can quote it. The reply says which page it read and links to it.

The teammate reads the database schema first, then queries rows from it with a sort you asked for. A long answer comes back as a table in the thread. One query returns at most 100 rows, so a wide question is answered a page at a time rather than in one dump.

A new page under a page or database you approved is a small, reversible write, so it goes straight through. The reply names the parent and the title. The teammate can also append to a page it can reach: headings, paragraphs, bulleted and numbered lists, to-dos, toggles, callouts, quotes, and dividers, up to 100 blocks in one go.

One property on one page applies at once. A change across several rows comes back as a list of what would move, and waits for a yes. The teammate can set a title, text, number, select, multi-select, date, checkbox, URL, email, phone, or status, and nothing else. A write also needs the message you sent to name it, because thread history and a pasted page cannot authorize one.

A schedule saves on the spot. It needs an explicit time zone, runs under the Notion connection of the person who asked, and fails with a named reason rather than running if that connection is disconnected.
Connect it
Five steps, from Admin or from Slack.
You sign in through a page Chickpea serves, never in Slack. The link the teammate posts is good for one action, for one teammate, for 24 hours.
- In Chickpea Admin, open the teammate, then Connections, find Notion, and choose Connect. Or ask in Slack,
@pm connect Notion, and open the link it posts. - Choose who uses it. Team is one shared Notion account that everyone who can use the teammate acts through. Personal means each member signs in as themselves, and Notion records their edits as them.
- Choose Continue to sign in. The sign-in opens in a second tab while Chickpea waits in the first, and the attempt lasts 30 minutes. There is no token to paste and no config file to edit.
- On Notion's own screen, tick the pages and databases the teammate may use, then choose Allow access. That picker is the boundary. A page you tick brings the pages under it, so tick narrowly. Reconnect the account to choose a different set later.

A connection belongs to one teammate. Giving a second teammate Notion means a second sign-in with its own picker, so the support teammate never inherits the pages the ops teammate can reach.
A teammate with a Notion connection is handed a fixed list of capabilities that Chickpea curates, not Notion's whole API. Nine of them: search pages and databases, read a page, read a page as Markdown, read a database schema, query a database, query a data source, create a child page, update a page's properties, and append blocks to a page. Archiving, deleting, sharing, changing permissions, and the raw block API are left out, so nothing a teammate is told can reach them. The capability list is in the product source.

Questions people ask
Can I use an AI agent with Notion?
Yes, in three different places, which is why the question is confusing. Notion Agent works inside Notion. An MCP client such as Claude Code or Cursor reaches Notion from an editor. A Chickpea teammate works in a Slack channel, holds a Notion connection of its own, and answers whoever asks in the thread. This page is the third one.
Is this Notion AI or Notion Agent?
No. Notion Agent is Notion's own product and runs inside Notion, creating and editing pages from the workspace and the apps you connected to it. Notion says Business and Enterprise plans include a usage allowance for it. A Chickpea teammate runs in Slack, on your own Cloudflare account, and reaches into Notion through a connection you approved. If you want the agent inside Notion, use theirs.
What is the Notion agent in Slack?
Probably Notion's AI connector for Slack, which runs the opposite direction to this page. It lets Notion AI search your Slack messages from inside Notion, and it lets Notion Agent post messages and reply in Slack threads. Notion says it needs Business or Enterprise, a workspace with more than one member, and both a Slack workspace owner and a Notion workspace owner to set up. A Chickpea teammate lives in the channel instead, and reads and writes Notion from there.
Does Notion support MCP?
Yes. Notion runs a hosted MCP server at mcp.notion.com/mcp with OAuth sign-in, and documents Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, VS Code, and other MCP clients. Notion also says it works best for one person's own workflow rather than for a team. This connector is not that server.
Does it use Notion's MCP server?
No. Notion is a managed lane here. You sign in with Notion on a page Chickpea serves, the picker on that screen decides the reach, and the teammate is handed a fixed list of nine capabilities rather than a tool list discovered from a server. Nothing in this connector talks to mcp.notion.com, and this page does not cover it.
Which pages can it see?
Only the pages and databases you ticked on Notion's screen when you signed in, and the pages under them. That picker is the authorization boundary, so changing which pages a teammate can reach means reconnecting the account and ticking a different set. What it may do with them is a separate and narrower question: the teammate holds a fixed capability list, and the binding on it can be cut down but never widened by anything said in a channel.
Can it delete pages?
No. The capability list has nine entries, and none of them deletes, archives, shares, or changes permissions. The raw block API is left out as well. On top of that limit sits the gate: during a Slack turn Chickpea refuses any managed capability whose effect is not a read unless the message you just sent names that action.
Do I still need Notion's Slack integration?
Most teams do, because it does things a teammate cannot. Notion's Slack app unfurls a Notion link into a preview, sends a Slack message into a Notion database with /notion create, makes a task with /notion task, and posts notifications for mentions, comments, and property changes. Database and button automations can send a Slack message too, which Notion puts on its paid plans. A Chickpea teammate hears nothing from Notion and posts nothing unprompted. What it adds is answering questions from the wiki, writing pages, schedules, and several connected accounts in one teammate.
Will it post in Slack when a Notion page changes?
Not on its own. Nothing in this lane listens to Notion. Ask for a schedule instead, such as a Monday list of what is still in review, and it posts that to the channel at the time you set. For notifications when a page changes, keep Notion's own Slack app.
Which Notion plan does this need?
No particular one. Notion says both Members and Workspace owners can add a connection under Settings and Connections, and puts no paid plan on that, though Enterprise owners can limit which connections members install. What the teammate can read and change is what the account that signed in can read and change, narrowed to the pages ticked in the picker. The parts Notion does gate are its own: Slack automation actions need a paid plan, and the Notion AI connector for Slack needs Business or Enterprise. Neither is involved here.
